Atrial fibrillation and prognosis in heart failure

A newly published study highlights the potential of High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) as a clinically relevant biomarker in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

The investigators found that circulating HMGB1 levels were significantly elevated in HFpEF patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) compared with those in sinus rhythm. Furthermore, patients with persistent AF exhibited the highest HMGB1 concentrations, suggesting a close relationship between HMGB1-mediated inflammation and AF progression.

Elevated HMGB1 was also independently associated with all-cause mortality, indicating that this alarmin may provide valuable prognostic information beyond its association with arrhythmia. The study further demonstrated strong performance of HMGB1 for mortality prediction, supporting its potential application in risk stratification of HFpEF patients.
These findings add to the growing evidence that HMGB1 is a key mediator linking inflammation, cardiac remodeling, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

At HMGBiotech, we support HMGB1 research with a comprehensive portfolio of validated recombinant HMGB1 proteins, neutralizing and detection antibodies and specialized research reagents.
